With the available “Teeth Grinding” nights guards available in retail stores and the internet, most don’t address the needs of the TMJ sufferer. In fact, although the OTC night guards are effective at protecting the teeth at night, many have aspects about them that can cause TMJ pains.
Dr. David Spainhower started out to help solve the problem with OTC night guards and created a family of night/mouth guards that reduce the possibilities and probabilities of causing pains, but increase the probabilities to reduce the pains.
Dr. Spainhower invented the SmartGuard night guards which are Anterior Deprogramming appliances which reduce clenching forces up to about 70%. What this does is, calm down the muscles of mastication while sleeping. When your symptoms and pains are caused or made worse by clenching jaw muscles while sleeping, and you wear the SmartGuard, fatigued muscles relax more and the pains reduce.
The patented convex split “Double power wedge” design of the SmartGuard helps prevent the jaw/condyle from being forced back which can pinch more delicate tissues that can cause pain. The SmartGuards are more comfortable than the others as well. In fact, many of you will wake up and walk around the house before taking it out because it feels so good to have it in.
In other technical terms, the SmartGuards eliminate pain causing “muscle engrams” which cause a lot of tension and stress in the muscles and the head. This alone is worth a great deal of money compared to expensive TMJ Splint from the TMJ dentist.
Also, the SmartGuards are more secure in the mouth compared to the other guards. So, even a TMJ mouth guard may theoretically be designed to reduce pains, it will be loose and fall out of the mouth at night…and if it’s not in the mouth, it can’t reduce your pains.
Even with the high cost of TMJ therapy by your TMJ Dentist that can cost upwards to 7,000 to 10,000 dollars, the appliances don’t work all of the time. The SmartGuard is an excellent choice to treat your TMJ symptoms or if you just want to protect your teeth at night from the effects of grinding your teeth.
